Parent Informations
UIL stands for “University Interscholastic League” which is the governing body for athletic, academic, drama, and music competitions in Texas. NEISD sponsors academic teams at each of the middle and high schools. The Driscoll UIL academic team is one of the best in the district. Our school has won the middle school cup in the past and we will continue to do our part to keep that tradition this year!
The Driscoll UIL coaches have established a practice schedule for the 2016-17 school year. Students must attend practice sessions regularly to be successful in their events. There are eight events at each UIL meet and students must choose in which event(s) they wish to participate.
Driscoll competes in the NEISD District meet. The home pages give the dates and information about each meet. All meets are held on Saturdays. Students may stay for the entire time on Saturdays or they are welcome to come for their event and then leave with you as needed. We require parents to “sign their student out” when the student leaves during the meet. Parents are invited to attend the Awards ceremony. No spectators are allowed in the testing rooms/hallways. A form will be sent home with your child the week of each competition that provides the schedule and reminds your student in which events he/she is competing.
Parents must complete a travel permission slip that covers travel throughout the season and a publicity release form. These forms are required by the district before your student can compete. They are available at the practices or with Mrs. Watkins in r room 1121.
Students sign up for competitions during practices. Since some of our meets are limited in numbers and others charge the school a fee for each test that is taken, it is important that our numbers are correct. Therefore, any student who signs up for a competition but does not attend it will not be allowed to compete at the next meet. We understand that emergencies and illnesses do happen on the day of the event. If that occurs, please email Mrs. Watkins [email protected] so that she will know to fill that slot with another student.
There is a dress code for UIL participants. Students should wear jeans and the Driscoll UIL t-shirt or another Driscoll shirt. UIL shirts are available for $25. The order form is available at practice ‘s and is due October 2nd. Parents are also welcome to purchase a Driscoll UIL shirt so that they can support the team!
While there are entry fees to some of our meets, our organization does various fundraising events throughout the year to pay for them. It is our goal for UIL to always remain free to our students. Therefore, it is imperative that our parents volunteer to help during these events. Many of these opportunities to help include, sitting at the table to help supervise our students during a competition or helping sell concessions during certain athletic competitions.
